What should you know about cervical myelo?

The spinal cord carries messages between the brain and the body. Narrowing around the cord can disturb those messages. People may notice clumsy fingers, trouble fastening buttons, altered sensation in the hands, a heavy feeling in the legs, or unsteadiness on stairs. Neck pain can occur, but cord-related changes may be more significant than pain. Cervical spondylosis is one possible cause of narrowing; a clinician considers the examination and imaging together.

Arrange a medical assessment if coordination, balance, or walking is changing. The clinician may test reflexes, strength, sensation, hand dexterity, and gait, then decide whether neck imaging is needed. Until reviewed, avoid activities that repeatedly forcefully bend or twist the neck, and do not begin neck manipulation without guidance. Treatment depends on the degree of cord compression and whether symptoms are stable. Options can include monitoring, rehabilitation for selected problems, or an operation such as cervical fusion or laminectomy when decompression is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly worsening weakness, new difficulty walking, repeated falls, loss of hand control, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. After a significant neck injury, new weakness or numbness also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for neck pain to become severe: changes in coordination or gait can signal pressure on the spinal cord.

Ask: Could my examination suggest spinal cord involvement? What findings on imaging matter? Which activities should I pause? Would physiotherapy be appropriate now? What changes should trigger urgent review? If surgery is discussed, ask what decompression would address and how recovery would be planned.
