What should you know about cellulitis under arm?

Underarm cellulitis may cause a warm, tender, red, or swollen area that expands over time. It can begin after shaving irritation, a scratch, insect bite, wound, or inflamed skin. A painful lump may instead be an abscess, an inflamed hair follicle, or a swollen lymph node, so the location alone cannot confirm cellulitis. Deodorant, friction, and moisture can irritate the fold and make discomfort worse, but irritation does not explain every spreading or increasingly painful patch.

Arrange a prompt medical review for spreading underarm redness, warmth, swelling, or pain. Keep the fold gently clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and pause shaving and fragranced products until the skin has been assessed. Do not squeeze a lump or try to open it yourself. If treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and report a rash, breathing difficulty, or other medicine reaction. Mention diabetes, immune problems, recent wounds, and any athlete's foot or other skin break.

Get urgent help if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns black or blistered, or you develop fever, shaking, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or marked weakness. These symptoms can indicate deeper infection or sepsis. A rapidly enlarging lump may need drainage as well as infection treatment.
