What should you know about cellulitis shiny skin?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin and the tissue beneath them. Inflammation draws extra blood flow and fluid into the area. As the skin swells, its surface can become stretched, smooth, tight, and reflective, giving it a shiny appearance.

The affected area may feel hot, sore, or firm, and redness can spread beyond the point where it first appeared. Cellulitis may follow a cut, insect bite, crack between the toes, ulcer, or another break in the skin. Athlete's foot can create small openings that allow bacteria to enter. Shiny skin alone does not establish the cause; irritation, injury, or other swelling can also change how skin looks.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment if cellulitis is suspected, because treatment may require prescription antibiotics. Do not squeeze the area, massage it, or apply irritating creams. Keep any wound clean and covered as advised, and wash your hands after touching the skin.

If a leg or arm is affected, resting it and raising it above the level of your heart when practical may ease swelling. Drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Marking the edge of redness with a pen and noting the time can help you describe whether it is spreading, but this should not delay care.

Seek urgent medical help if redness or swelling is spreading quickly, pain is severe or worsening, the skin becomes blistered or dark, or you feel feverish, faint, confused, unusually weak, or short of breath. These symptoms can signal a serious infection or a complication such as sepsis.

Contact a clinician promptly even with milder symptoms if you have diabetes, poor circulation, a weakened immune system, or an infection near the eye. A clinician can examine the skin, look for an entry point, and decide whether additional treatment or monitoring is needed.

Ask what may have allowed bacteria to enter, whether the shiny skin is consistent with cellulitis, how to take any prescribed medicine, and which changes should prompt a return visit. Mention when the redness began, how quickly it changed, any wound or foot rash, and whether you have fever or increasing pain.
