What should you know about cellulitis paronychia?

Paronychia usually causes redness, tenderness, warmth, and swelling at the edge of a fingernail or toenail. Pus may collect beside the nail. Cellulitis can develop when bacteria enter through this damaged skin and may cause redness or swelling that moves away from the nail fold. Skin Redness and Skin Swelling around a nail do not by themselves show how deep the infection is.

Nail biting, picking at cuticles, manicures, hangnails, and frequent wet work can damage the protective barrier. A clinician may need to check for a collection that requires drainage, rather than treating every nail-fold problem in the same way.

Keep the finger or toe clean and dry, avoid biting or cutting the cuticle, and do not pierce or squeeze the swollen area. Protect it from pressure and remove rings early if a finger is swelling. Warm water soaks may be suggested for some mild nail-fold infections, but spreading redness or worsening pain needs professional advice.

Tell the clinician if you have Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation. If medicine is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and return if the area continues to expand.

Get urgent help if redness travels up a finger or toe, movement becomes difficult, pain is severe, the fingertip becomes numb or pale, or you develop Fever, chills, confusion, or marked weakness. A rapidly worsening infection can spread into deeper tissue or contribute to Sepsis.

Ask whether this is limited to the nail fold, whether pus needs drainage, how to protect the nail, and which changes mean the infection has become cellulitis.
