Cellulitis and Neosporin: what to know

Neosporin is a topical antibiotic product intended for some minor skin injuries. Cellulitis is an infection beneath the surface, often marked by spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and Painful Skin. A cream applied to a small cut cannot be assumed to reach or clear the deeper infection.

Some people develop irritation or an allergic rash after topical antibiotic products. New itching, weeping, or a rash that follows the shape of an application can be a reaction rather than improvement, so stop and seek advice if this happens.

Have a clinician assess suspected cellulitis promptly. Until then, wash gently, pat dry, cover an open wound with a clean dressing, and avoid picking or squeezing the area. Do not apply Neosporin inside the eye, over a large area, or repeatedly to worsening redness unless a clinician specifically advises it.

If prescribed treatment is started, use it according to the instructions. Mention medication allergies, previous reactions to topical antibiotics, Type 2 Diabetes, Athlete's Foot, or a recent bite or injury.

Get urgent help if redness is spreading, pain is escalating, swelling is marked, pus or blisters appear, the skin turns dark, or you develop Fever, chills, weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Face or near-eye involvement needs particularly prompt review.

Sepsis is a dangerous response to infection. Sudden deterioration or feeling severely unwell is an emergency, even if the skin problem initially looked small.
