Cellulitis near the eye: when to act

Cellulitis can cause tender redness, warmth, and swelling in skin near an eyelid or the surrounding face. Infection around the eye is different from a minor surface irritation, blocked gland, or allergic reaction, and an examination may be needed to tell them apart.

Pain when moving the eye, reduced or double vision, difficulty opening the eye, or a bulging appearance is especially concerning. Do not press, squeeze, lance, or massage a swollen area near the eye.

Arrange same-day medical advice for new or worsening redness or swelling near the eye, particularly after a wound, insect bite, sinus problem, or skin infection. Keep hands clean, avoid contact lenses and eye makeup, and do not put creams or homemade remedies into the eye.

A clean, cool compress over the closed eyelid may briefly ease discomfort if it does not increase pain, but it is only a comfort measure. Tell the clinician about Fever, facial pain, recent injury, medication allergies, or Type 2 Diabetes.

Seek emergency care immediately for vision change, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, a bulging eye, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, or a severe headache with vomiting. Fever or chills add concern, but their absence does not make the situation safe.

A serious infection can spread beyond the local skin. Sepsis may cause sudden worsening and feeling profoundly unwell; call emergency services if those symptoms occur.

Ask whether the infection involves only the eyelid skin or deeper tissues, which treatment is needed, whether your vision and eye movements are affected, and what symptoms should send you straight to emergency care.
