What are cellulitis mouth symptoms?

Infection around the lips, cheek, or jaw may cause skin that is warm, red, swollen, and tender. The area can feel tight, and movement of the lips or jaw may be uncomfortable. A dental problem, wound, piercing, cracked skin, or another nearby source may allow bacteria to enter. Mouth-area swelling has several possible causes, so these symptoms do not identify cellulitis without an examination. Painful Skin and Skin Redness may extend beyond the original spot.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new or spreading redness and swelling around the mouth or face. Do not squeeze the area, lance a swelling, or use someone else's antibiotics. Tell the clinician about dental pain, recent procedures, wounds, allergies, and Type 2 Diabetes. Keep any visible wound clean and follow prescribed treatment instructions while watching for changes in speech, swallowing, jaw movement, or breathing.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swallowing, speaking, or opening the mouth, rapidly increasing facial or tongue swelling, drooling, faintness, confusion, or severe weakness. Fever with a rapidly worsening facial infection also needs urgent assessment. Infection in this region can affect deeper tissues, and a severe spread may be associated with Sepsis; do not wait for the skin to become extensively red.

Ask whether the swelling appears to come from the skin, mouth, or a tooth; whether dental or other specialist care is needed; and which changes require emergency help. Mention Fever, Skin Swelling, recent procedures, medicines, allergies, and Type 2 Diabetes.
