What should you know about cellulitis leaking?

Cellulitis is a deeper skin infection. The surrounding skin can become red, hot, swollen, and painful, and an opening in the skin can release fluid. Thick yellow or green material may be pus; watery fluid can come from swelling; bleeding may follow rubbing, scratching, or a small break in the skin. Drainage does not show on its own which treatment is needed, and it does not replace an examination.

A clinician may check whether there is an abscess, a wound that needs cleaning, or infection spreading beyond the original area. Athlete's Foot can create cracks between the toes that allow bacteria to enter, while Type 2 Diabetes can make skin infections harder to manage. Do not squeeze the area or try to open it yourself.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Gently rinse visible drainage with clean running water, pat the skin dry, and cover it with a clean, non-stick dressing. Change the dressing when it is wet or dirty, place used dressings in a closed bag, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or razors. Keep the limb raised when practical to ease swelling.

Arrange prompt medical review rather than relying on home care. Take any prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed; do not use leftover antibiotics or apply harsh antiseptics inside an open wound. Note when the leaking began, its colour and thickness, whether it smells unusual, and whether the red or swollen area is expanding.

Seek urgent medical care today if drainage is increasing, the redness is spreading, pain or swelling is intensifying, or the area is becoming hot and tender. Fever, chills, marked weakness, dizziness, confusion, fast breathing, or a racing heartbeat can signal a more serious infection. Sepsis is a medical emergency, so call local emergency services for severe symptoms, fainting, confusion, or difficulty breathing.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if the affected area is near the eye, on the face, or over a joint, or if you have Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system. Bring a list of medicines and allergies, and avoid covering the area so tightly that circulation is restricted.

Ask whether the drainage suggests an abscess or another wound problem, whether a sample or drainage procedure is needed, how to clean and dress the area, and what changes should prompt reassessment. Also ask when improvement should begin after treatment and how to protect any cracked skin that may have allowed the infection to start.
