What should you know about cellulitis in the thigh?

Bacteria can enter through a small cut, blister, bite, shaving nick, ulcer, or irritated hair follicle. The thigh may feel hot and sore, with redness and swelling that widen over time. The groin may also become tender because nearby lymph nodes respond to infection. A boil or pocket of pus can sit alongside cellulitis and may need a different procedure. Athlete's Foot can cause skin cracks, and Type 2 Diabetes can increase the need for careful monitoring of skin injuries.

Arrange prompt medical review for a painful, warm, swollen or expanding thigh patch. Rest the leg, keep any wound clean and covered as advised, and avoid scratching, squeezing, massage or tight clothing over the area. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the dosing instructions and report a rash, breathing difficulty or other suspected reaction urgently. Tell the clinician about recent travel, injections, injuries, bites and previous episodes.

Seek urgent care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, swelling is marked, the skin blisters or darkens, or you develop Fever, shaking, confusion, faintness or profound weakness. Sudden leg swelling with breathlessness or chest pain also needs emergency help because it may not be a skin infection. A severe infection can lead to Sepsis.

Ask whether the area is cellulitis, an abscess or another problem, how to check for spread, when treatment should start helping, and whether a wound or underlying condition needs treatment to prevent recurrence.
