Cellulitis groin symptoms: what they can look like

Cellulitis is an infection beneath the surface rather than a minor surface irritation. The affected groin skin may feel hotter than nearby skin and hurt when touched or when clothing rubs against it. Swelling can make the area feel tight. Some people develop Fever, chills, tiredness, or a general sense of illness, while others have mainly local symptoms. A clear border is not required, and skin colour changes can look different on different skin tones. A clinician must assess the pattern because eczema, fungal infection, an abscess, or an irritated follicle may need another approach.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if redness, pain, warmth, or swelling is new or expanding. Marking the outer edge of visible redness with a pen can help you notice spread while waiting, but it does not replace examination. Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing and hair removal, and do not puncture a lump. Tell the clinician about wounds, recent procedures, Athlete's Foot, medicines, allergies, and Type 2 Diabetes. Go to emergency care if the skin changes quickly, pain is severe or seems greater than the visible skin change, or there are blisters, darkening skin, faintness, confusion, rapid breathing, or difficulty staying awake. Fever with shaking chills or a very unwell feeling can signal infection affecting the whole body, including Sepsis. Genital involvement, inability to pass urine, or rapidly increasing swelling also needs immediate attention.
