Cellulitis foot treatment: what to know

Cellulitis can make the foot warm, red, swollen and painful, sometimes with redness extending up the leg. A crack, ulcer, blister, bite, puncture or Athlete's Foot between the toes can let bacteria enter. These findings describe how cellulitis presents; they do not mean every red or swollen foot has cellulitis.

A clinician may inspect the skin, wound, circulation and sensation, then select treatment based on severity and medical history. Type 2 Diabetes, reduced sensation or poor circulation can make a foot infection harder to notice and may change follow-up needs.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and attend follow-up if advised. Rest the foot, elevate it when sitting, keep any wound clean and covered, and avoid tight footwear or pressure over the affected area. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice spread, but do not delay care while monitoring. Do not use leftover antibiotics or apply harsh chemicals.

Seek same-day assessment if redness expands, swelling increases, pain worsens, drainage appears, or walking becomes difficult. Emergency care is needed for fever with confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, numbness, dusky skin or rapid deterioration. A rapidly progressing foot infection can involve deeper tissue or lead to Sepsis.

Ask what caused the skin break, whether you need wound or fungal treatment as well as antibiotics, and how to protect the foot while it heals. Confirm when you should expect improvement, who will review the foot, and which changes require immediate help.
