What should you know about cellulitis face symptoms?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper layers of the skin. On the face, the affected area may feel hot, tight or painful and can become more swollen over time. The skin may look red or darker than usual, depending on your natural skin tone. A break in the skin, an insect bite, a wound, or a foot fungal infection such as Athlete's Foot can provide an entry point. Fever or feeling generally unwell can accompany the local changes. Facial swelling can affect nearby areas, so an examination helps distinguish cellulitis from dental, sinus, allergic or other causes.

Arrange same-day medical advice for new or worsening facial redness, warmth, swelling or pain. Do not squeeze, scratch or massage the area. Gently clean any nearby break in the skin and keep it covered with a clean dressing. Note when the change began and whether its edge is spreading; a photograph can help a clinician compare changes. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and mention allergies, pregnancy, immune problems or conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes.
