Cellulitis Clinical Manifestations: What to Know

Cellulitis commonly causes a localized area of red, warm, swollen, tender skin that may spread, sometimes with fever or feeling unwell. The affected area can feel tight, painful, or more sensitive than nearby skin. Cellulitis is a deeper skin infection, so the visible border may be less sharply defined than a surface rash. It can occur on the legs, arms, face, or other areas, especially where bacteria have entered through a break in the skin.

The combination of warmth, redness, swelling, and tenderness reflects inflammation in deeper skin and the tissues beneath it. The skin may look shiny, and nearby lymph nodes can become sore or enlarged. A small cut, insect bite, ulcer, wound, or cracked skin between the toes can provide an entry point; Athlete's Foot may create such cracks. People with Type 2 Diabetes can need particularly careful assessment because a foot or leg infection may be harder to notice or heal. Cellulitis can resemble other causes of skin redness, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Arrange a prompt clinical assessment for a new, expanding, hot, painful, or swollen area of skin. Note when it started, how quickly it is changing, and whether there is a wound, drainage, or a recent bite. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and remove rings or tight items near swelling. Resting and elevating an affected limb may reduce discomfort while you arrange care. Do not rely on leftover antibiotics or delay assessment to see whether spreading redness settles on its own.

Seek urgent medical help if redness or swelling is spreading quickly, pain is severe or rapidly worsening, or the skin develops blisters, dark discoloration, or numbness. Fever, chills, marked weakness, confusion, dizziness, or fast breathing can signal a more serious infection and need immediate attention. Facial or eye-area swelling, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing also warrants emergency care. A clinician may need to assess for complications such as Sepsis, particularly when whole-body symptoms accompany the skin changes.

Ask which findings support cellulitis, whether a wound or another skin problem may have allowed infection to enter, and what change should prompt a return visit.
