Characteristics of cellulitis

The affected skin may feel hotter than nearby skin and look tight or shiny. The border can become less distinct as inflammation spreads, and movement may be uncomfortable when an arm, leg, or joint area is involved. Some people also develop Fever, chills, tiredness, or swollen nearby glands. Cellulitis may begin around a cut, insect bite, ulcer, injection site, or cracked skin, although the entry point is not always visible. A clinician may need to distinguish it from an allergic reaction, eczema, a bruise, or another infection.

Arrange an assessment for a new warm, painful, swollen red area, particularly if it is enlarging. Until you are seen, keep the skin clean, avoid applying irritating products, and do not pierce blisters or squeeze a tender lump. Photographing the area and gently noting its edge can help you describe change, but do not delay care to monitor it for long. Mention Athlete's Foot, wounds, recent procedures, and Type 2 Diabetes because these details can affect the assessment.

Seek urgent care when the skin changes quickly, pain is intense, the area becomes numb, blisters or dark discoloration appear, or you feel faint, confused, or unusually weak. Facial swelling, eye symptoms, or trouble swallowing or breathing require emergency attention. Fever with a worsening infection needs prompt review. If you have a weakened immune system, poor circulation, or Type 2 Diabetes, contact a clinician early rather than waiting for the skin to settle. Severe infection can spread and lead to Sepsis.
