What should you know about cellulitis behind ear?

Look for warmth, tenderness, swelling, and redness or a darker patch behind or around the ear. The skin may feel tight, and the change can extend onto the scalp or neck. A scratch, piercing, insect bite, eczema flare, or ear problem may be an entry point or a separate cause. Pain inside the ear, discharge, reduced hearing, or a prominent ear needs specific examination rather than assuming the problem is limited to skin.

Arrange prompt clinical review for new swelling or a spreading tender patch behind the ear. Keep the skin clean, avoid pressing the swelling, and remove irritating jewellery only if it can be done safely. Tell the clinician about ear symptoms, recent wounds, diabetes, immune conditions, and medicine allergies. Treatment may include prescription antibiotics or care for an underlying ear or skin problem.

Seek emergency care if the ear is pushed outward, swelling spreads quickly, you develop severe headache, confusion, faintness, breathing trouble, or difficulty swallowing. Rapidly worsening pain, blisters, dusky or black skin, and fever with chills also require urgent review because infection can extend into deeper tissue or lead to sepsis.

Ask whether the ear canal, cartilage, or nearby lymph nodes are involved; whether you need examination by another specialist; and which symptoms should send you straight to emergency care.
