What should you know about cellulitis around mouth?

The affected skin may become warm, tender, swollen, and red or darker than the surrounding skin. Around the mouth, swelling can make movement uncomfortable and may extend toward the nose, cheek, or jaw. A small cut, cracked skin, shaving irritation, or another break in the skin can provide an entry point for bacteria. A sore around the mouth does not by itself confirm cellulitis; a clinician may need to distinguish it from a dental, viral, or allergic problem.

Arrange a same-day medical assessment for new, spreading, or painful inflammation around the mouth. Treatment may involve prescription antibiotics, selected according to the examination and your medical history. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or picking it, and note whether the edge of the swelling is moving. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or shaving equipment. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune problems, recent dental work, and any medicine allergies.

Seek emergency care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, the lips or tongue enlarge quickly, you feel faint or confused, or severe weakness develops. Get urgent help for rapidly worsening pain, blistering, skin that turns dusky or black, or a high fever with shaking chills. These features can signal a deeper infection or sepsis and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether the inflammation is confined to the skin or could involve a tooth, lip, or deeper tissue; which treatment is appropriate; how to track its border; and what change should prompt urgent review.
