Cellulitis around the eye in adults

Adults may notice a puffy or heavy eyelid, sore skin around one eye, warmth, and redness that extends across the cheek or brow. The eye can be hard to open because of swelling. A small break in the skin, recent procedure, bite, or nearby infection can allow bacteria to enter. Diabetes or medicines that suppress immunity can change the risk and may affect how quickly an infection progresses. A medical examination is needed because surface swelling can look similar to other eye and skin conditions.

Seek same-day medical advice for new or increasing eye-area redness, warmth, pain, or swelling. Keep hands away from the eye, do not squeeze the skin, and avoid using someone else's eye drops or antibiotics. Bring a list of regular medicines and mention Type 2 Diabetes, immune problems, recent dental or sinus symptoms, injury, or a procedure. The clinician may check vision, eye movement, the skin, and nearby sources of infection before selecting treatment.

Use emergency services for vision loss or blurring, double vision, pain when moving the eye, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, collapse, rapidly increasing swelling, or fever with severe weakness. These features may indicate deeper spread rather than a mild skin problem. Widespread illness, cold clammy skin, or confusion can be signs of Sepsis and should never wait for a routine appointment.
