Short answer

Cellulitis can cause localized swelling with warmth, redness, and tenderness, but new or worsening swelling needs a clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Breathing difficulty or sudden facial swelling

What the swelling may show

In cellulitis, inflammation makes the infected area swollen, warm, red, and sore; the edge may enlarge over time. Swelling can also follow an injury, allergy, vein problem, or fluid build-up, and these causes may not need antibiotics. One-sided, painful swelling with skin change deserves examination, particularly when it began quickly. A clinician may inspect the skin, check circulation, and look for an entry point such as a crack or wound.

What you can do

Seek same-day advice for suspected cellulitis rather than waiting for the swelling to resolve by itself. Keep any wound clean and avoid massage, squeezing, or puncturing the swollen skin. Remove tight jewellery near the area. Rest and elevate the limb if comfortable, but do not use compression unless a clinician has advised it. Follow the prescribed plan and note whether redness, pain, or swelling is extending.

When swelling is urgent

Get urgent help if swelling spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, the skin turns dusky or blistered, or you develop fever, shaking, confusion, faintness, or breathing difficulty. Sudden swelling of the face, lips, or tongue can be an allergic emergency. A swollen leg with chest symptoms also needs emergency assessment.

What to ask

Ask what is most likely causing the swelling, whether you need antibiotics, how often to check the skin, and which activities or dressings are suitable while it heals.

Questions people ask

How can I tell if swelling is cellulitis?

Cellulitis often combines swelling with warmth, tenderness, and spreading redness, but other problems can look similar. An examination is the safest way to distinguish them.

Should I elevate swelling from cellulitis?

Gentle elevation may feel helpful for a limb, provided it does not cause discomfort or breathing trouble. Follow the advice given for your specific condition.
