What should you know about cellulitis and heart problems?

Cellulitis is an infection that causes a local area of skin redness, warmth, pain, and swelling. A heart condition does not cause every episode of cellulitis, and cellulitis does not automatically mean that the heart is failing. However, reduced circulation or ongoing leg swelling can make skin more vulnerable to cracks and infection. Some heart conditions also make sudden fluid changes more significant, so a clinician should know about your diagnosis and medicines.

Arrange a same-day clinical review if cellulitis is suspected. Tell the clinician about heart failure, valve disease, rhythm problems, kidney concerns, allergies, and all medicines, including water tablets. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and keep the affected area clean. Elevate a swollen limb only if that position is comfortable and does not worsen breathing. Do not start compression or change fluid medicines without advice.

Seek urgent help for breathlessness, chest discomfort, faintness, new confusion, blue or clammy skin, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or a high temperature with shaking. These signs can indicate a serious infection or a heart-related problem. Fever, worsening weakness, or swelling that moves beyond the original area also warrants prompt review.

Ask which symptoms mean you should return, whether your heart medicines need monitoring, and when gentle movement or compression is appropriate. Ask how to check the edge of the redness and what improvement should look like.
