Cellulite and Stretch Marks: What to Know

Short answer
Cellulite causes dimpling from bands beneath the skin, while stretch marks are lines formed when the skin’s deeper support layers change with stretching.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cellulite appearance
- Dimpling or uneven depressions
- Stretch-mark appearance
- Linear bands that can change colour over time
How the marks differ
Cellulite usually looks like depressions or an uneven orange-peel texture, often on the thighs, hips or buttocks. Stretch marks tend to appear as linear bands that may begin red, pink, purple or brown and later become lighter. They can follow pregnancy, growth, muscle or body-composition change, and inherited skin tendencies. One does not transform into the other, although both may be noticed on the same area.
Options to discuss
Keep the skin comfortable with gentle cleansing and moisturising, and protect exposed areas from sun so colour contrast is less obvious. Avoid harsh scrubbing or promises of complete removal. A dermatologist can decide whether the priority is dimpled texture, line colour, surface texture or laxity. Depending on timing, skin type and medical history, options may include Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling or Carboxytherapy. Earlier marks and older marks may respond differently, and several visits may be considered.
When to arrange a review
Have a clinician examine marks that arise suddenly without a clear body change, bleed, ulcerate, itch intensely, hurt, or occur with easy bruising or unusual weakness. A rapidly changing isolated patch also deserves assessment. Ordinary cellulite and stretch marks are not emergencies, but a sudden widespread skin change should not be self-diagnosed from images alone.
Questions worth asking
Ask which feature each treatment targets, whether your skin tone changes the plan, what temporary redness or pigment change may occur, how long recovery lasts, and whether pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines or a history of raised scars changes suitability.

Questions people ask
Can one treatment address both concerns?
Some procedures may influence more than one feature, but cellulite bands and stretch-mark lines are different targets and need separate assessment.
Do stretch marks mean the skin is damaged dangerously?
Stretch marks are common structural skin changes, but painful, ulcerated or unexplained new marks should be checked.
