Causes of secondary hyperthyroidism

Short answer
Secondary hyperthyroidism can occur when excess thyroid-stimulating hormone drives the gland, or when medicines and other thyroid conditions disrupt hormone balance.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the hormone pattern works
Most overactive thyroid patterns begin inside the thyroid, but a secondary pattern is driven by abnormal stimulation from the pituitary gland or another source. The pituitary normally releases thyroid-stimulating hormone, which signals the thyroid to make hormones. If that signal is inappropriately high, thyroid hormone production can rise. Excess thyroid hormone taken as medicine, thyroid inflammation, or an overactive thyroid nodule may produce a similar clinical picture, although the blood-test pattern and treatment differ.
The body may respond with palpitations, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, difficulty sleeping, feeling anxious, diarrhoea, or night sweats. These symptoms can have many causes, so a symptom alone does not establish hyperthyroidism. Blood tests usually compare thyroid hormone levels with thyroid-stimulating hormone, followed by targeted testing when needed.
What to do next
Book a clinical assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or occur together. Bring the names and doses of thyroid medicine, iodine-containing products, supplements, and medicines for other conditions. Do not change a thyroid dose without the prescriber’s guidance. Your clinician may examine your pulse and neck and arrange thyroid blood tests; further imaging or pituitary assessment depends on the results. Treatment is chosen for the cause and may include adjusting an external hormone source or treating excess thyroid activity.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for a very fast or irregular heartbeat with chest discomfort, severe breathlessness, fainting, marked confusion, or extreme agitation. Prompt review is also needed if palpitations are persistent, you cannot keep fluids down, or diarrhoea and sweating leave you weak or dizzy. A pregnancy, heart condition, or recent thyroid treatment change lowers the threshold for contacting a clinician.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your blood-test pattern suggests thyroid overproduction, pituitary stimulation, inflammation, or an external hormone source. Ask which medicines and supplements to pause or continue, whether your heart rate needs monitoring, and which symptoms should trigger urgent care.

Questions people ask
Is secondary hyperthyroidism the same as an overactive thyroid?
It describes excess thyroid hormone activity, but the cause may be abnormal stimulation from outside the thyroid or another specific process. Testing helps distinguish the pattern.
Can anxiety be the cause of these symptoms?
Feeling anxious can occur with many conditions, including excess thyroid activity, but it cannot identify the cause by itself. A clinical assessment and thyroid tests are more reliable.
