What can cause mastitis?

Factors that can contribute include oversupply, long gaps between feeds, ineffective latch or milk transfer, pressure on the breast, nipple trauma, and pumping substantially more milk than the baby needs. Mastitis can also occur outside breastfeeding and then requires assessment for infection or another breast problem.

Milk sitting in narrowed, swollen ducts can intensify local inflammation. This may cause a firm, tender, warm area and general flu-like symptoms even before a bacterial infection is clear. If bacteria become involved, skin organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus are frequent causes. A crack in the nipple can provide an entry point, but infection may occur without visible damage.

The condition can present with breast pain, redness, swelling, fever, chills, and fatigue. Those findings guide the urgency of assessment; they do not reveal the exact cause without considering the full history and examination.

Feed according to the baby's cues or express only enough for comfort if feeding is difficult. Sudden attempts to completely empty the breast, vigorous kneading, and excessive heat can aggravate tissue swelling. Cold packs wrapped in cloth, supportive rest, and a compatible anti-inflammatory or pain medicine may help.

A feeding assessment can identify shallow latch, pump-flange problems, or an oversupply pattern. If bacterial infection is suspected, a clinician may prescribe an antibiotic that is compatible with breastfeeding. Finish it as directed and return for reassessment if the breast is not improving.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly when breast redness or pain is worsening, fever accompanies local symptoms, you notice pus, or you develop a distinct swelling that may contain fluid. Get urgent help if you are confused, short of breath, faint, or rapidly becoming very unwell. Any mass, skin change, or nipple change that remains after the episode resolves should be examined rather than attributed indefinitely to mastitis.

Discuss when symptoms began, whether feeds or pumping patterns recently changed, and any nipple wounds or prior breast infections. Useful questions include whether you need an antibiotic, ultrasound, or culture; how to maintain feeding comfortably; what improvement should look like; and when a persistent lump needs specialist review.
