Short answer

Excessive thirst may result from fluid loss, heat, salty food, medicines, high blood sugar, or kidney problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What excessive thirst can mean

Thirst is the body's signal to replace water. Sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or not drinking enough can lead to dehydration. Heat exposure may add fatigue, headache, dizziness, or cramps. Persistent thirst with frequent urination, blurred vision, unusual tiredness, or weight change can occur when blood sugar is high, including with prediabetes, Type 1 Diabetes, or Type 2 Diabetes. Less commonly, altered kidney function can affect fluid balance. Dry mouth can also come from mouth breathing or medicines and does not always mean that the whole body lacks fluid.

What you can do now

Sip water regularly and replace fluids after sweating or gastrointestinal illness. Rest in a cool place after heat exposure, and avoid relying on very sugary drinks to settle thirst. Record when thirst began, how much you drink, urination changes, medicines, and associated symptoms. A clinician may review your history and arrange blood or urine checks to assess hydration, glucose, and kidney function. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. IV Fluid Therapy may be considered in acute care when oral fluids are not enough or cannot be kept down.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment if thirst is persistent, repeatedly wakes you, or comes with frequent urination, weakness, vomiting, confusion, or unexplained weight change. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe drowsiness, inability to drink, very little urine, or signs of serious heat illness. A dry mouth alone after exercise is usually managed with fluids, but ongoing symptoms deserve an explanation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, a blood-sugar problem, medicine-related dryness, or a kidney issue. Ask which blood or urine tests are appropriate, how to replace fluids safely, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
