What organism causes trichomoniasis?

It is not caused by a virus or fungus. Because the organism is a parasite, treatment requires a suitable prescription antimicrobial taken by mouth; vaginal creams used for yeast infections do not clear it.

Trichomonas vaginalis infects the genital tract. Many infected people have no noticeable symptoms and can still pass the organism to a sexual partner. When symptoms occur, trichomoniasis can present with vaginal discharge, genital itching or irritation, discomfort when urinating, or pain during sex. Those features overlap with other vaginal and urinary conditions, so symptoms cannot identify the parasite on their own.

A laboratory test on a vaginal sample or urine confirms the diagnosis. Testing can also distinguish trichomoniasis from yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, and other sexually transmitted infections that may need different care.

Book a sexual-health or gynaecology appointment for testing if you have compatible symptoms, a partner has been diagnosed, or you may have been exposed. Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the course even if discomfort improves sooner. Do not use leftover tablets or share medication.

Current sexual partners need evaluation and treatment at the same time to reduce reinfection. Avoid sex until everyone has completed treatment and symptoms have resolved. Your clinician may also offer tests for other sexually transmitted infections and advise when repeat testing is appropriate. Tell them if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have liver problems, or take medicines that could interact with treatment.

Seek prompt medical assessment for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, bleeding outside your expected period, pain during pregnancy, or symptoms that persist after completing treatment. These findings can reflect another infection or condition that needs examination. Severe pain, fainting, marked weakness, or heavy bleeding warrants urgent care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

You can ask which test will confirm the infection, how and when partners should obtain treatment, when sexual contact can safely resume, whether you need screening for other infections, and what follow-up is planned if symptoms remain. Also ask what to do after a missed dose and which side effects require a call.
