What should you know about catheter cloudy urine?

A catheter drains urine into a bag, and mucus or mineral sediment can collect in the tubing or bag. Dehydration can make urine darker and more concentrated. Cloudiness together with burning, bladder discomfort, fever, chills, worsening confusion, foul smell, or feeling unwell may indicate a urinary tract infection. Pain in the side or back with fever can be associated with a kidney infection. Cloudiness alone cannot identify the cause.

A kinked tube, a full bag, or the bag positioned above the bladder can interrupt drainage and create problems. Do not pull on the catheter or attempt to remove sediment yourself.

Check that the tubing is not bent or trapped, the bag is below bladder level, and urine can flow freely. Empty the bag using the instructed clean technique. Drink fluids if your clinician has not restricted them, and note changes in colour, smell, amount, pain, or temperature. Contact the catheter nurse or clinician if cloudiness persists, the system is not draining, or you need a catheter change. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever, chills, new back or side pain, vomiting, increasing confusion, blood or clots, or feeling suddenly much worse. Get emergency help if the catheter is blocked and the bladder feels painfully full, or if you become faint, severely weak, or difficult to wake.
