Cat-to-human rabies: what to know

Rabies can spread when saliva from an infected animal enters a bite, scratch, open wound, or mucous membrane. A cat that appears healthy may still need observation or public-health assessment, depending on the setting, behaviour, vaccination status, and ability to be monitored.

Risk cannot be judged from the size of the wound alone. A bite to the face, hand, or another highly innervated area, a deep wound, or contact with saliva deserves prompt professional advice. Do not wait for symptoms such as fever, unusual sensations, swallowing difficulty, or confusion.

Wash and flush the wound with soap and running water as soon as possible. Do not seal it with household glue or apply irritants. Avoid handling the animal again, note where and when the exposure occurred, and keep details about the cat available for health authorities or the treating clinician.

Get urgent medical advice after any bite or scratch that breaks the skin, saliva contact with an open wound or eyes, or exposure to a stray, ill, unusually aggressive, or unavailable cat. Do not postpone assessment while waiting to see whether the cat becomes unwell. If the exposure occurred in another country, say so, because local rabies patterns and available observation arrangements may differ.

Ask whether the exposure qualifies for post-exposure treatment, which doses or medicines are needed, and how follow-up will be arranged. Provide the wound location, time of contact, saliva exposure, animal details, travel history, and your prior rabies vaccination history.
