Cat red discharge eye: what should you know?

Redness and discharge can occur when the eye surface is irritated or inflamed. Watery discharge with itching may fit an allergic pattern, while sticky or pus-like discharge with eyelid crusting can occur with conjunctivitis. A foreign body, contact-lens problem, injury, or inflammation deeper in the eye can also cause redness. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, and discharge from one eye can spread to the other or to another person when infection is involved.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Wipe discharge away with clean water and a fresh clean pad for each eye, moving from the inner corner outward. Avoid rubbing, sharing towels, eye makeup, or contact lenses until the eye is better and a clinician has advised restarting lenses. Do not use leftover prescription drops, especially drops containing steroids, unless prescribed for this episode. A pharmacist or clinician can help decide whether examination or treatment is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, a chemical splash, or a feeling that something is stuck. Contact-lens wearers should seek early advice for a red eye. Emergency care is needed for sudden vision loss, severe pain, an irregular pupil, or redness with severe headache and vomiting. Fever or rapidly worsening swelling around the eye also warrants urgent review.

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctivitis, or another eye problem; whether you should stop contact lenses; and which drops are appropriate. Ask how long discharge should last and what change means you need another examination.
