What should you know about cat dust allergy?

The phrase can describe symptoms triggered by dust carried on a cat, dust in the home, or allergens from the cat itself. Cat-related proteins are found in skin flakes, saliva, and urine; house dust mites live mainly in household dust and bedding. Sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, and itchy throat can occur with allergic exposure. Asthma can add cough, wheeze, or chest tightness.

Symptoms that start near a cat and improve away from the home suggest one pattern, while symptoms that are worse in bedrooms or on waking may suggest indoor dust-mite exposure. These clues are helpful but do not establish the cause.

Keep a brief symptom diary that records location, timing, cleaning, bedding, and contact with cats. Reduce dust with damp cleaning, wash bedding regularly at a suitable hot setting, and keep cats out of the bedroom if possible. Wash hands after handling a cat and avoid vigorous dusting that sends particles into the air. A clinician can arrange allergy testing when the pattern remains unclear.

Seek urgent help for severe wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble swallowing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Recurring night symptoms, exercise-related wheeze, or a cough that persists after exposure has ended should be assessed for asthma.
