Cat cellulitis: what to know

Bacteria can enter through a bite puncture, scratch, cracked skin, or another small opening. Cellulitis affects deeper layers than a superficial scrape and may cause skin redness that feels warm, tight, swollen, or painful. The border can enlarge over time, and nearby lymph nodes may become tender. Cat contact does not by itself establish the diagnosis: eczema, an insect reaction, an abscess, or irritation can look similar. A clinician examines the area and considers the injury, progression, fever, medicines, allergies, and healing risks such as type 2 diabetes.

Gently wash a fresh scratch or bite with soap and running water, pat it dry, and cover open skin with a clean dressing. Do not massage a painful swollen area or use leftover antibiotics. Arrange medical advice promptly, especially when the injury is on the hand, face, foot, or close to a joint. Treatment may include prescription antibiotics and wound care; a deeper pocket of pus may need a separate procedure. Follow the prescribed plan and keep the area clean while watching whether the redness, pain, or swelling changes.

Seek same-day care for expanding skin redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pain, pus, red streaks, reduced movement, or fever. Go to emergency care for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, fast breathing, or difficulty staying awake, because these can be signs of sepsis. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation should seek advice early when a cat-related wound becomes inflamed.
