Cat blackheads: what to know

A blackhead, also called an open comedone, forms when a pore stays open while oil and shed skin cells collect inside. Air changes the exposed material at the opening, creating the dark appearance; it is not simply trapped dirt. Blackheads commonly occur on the nose, forehead, chin, chest, or back. They may be part of comedonal acne, although look-alike spots can include enlarged pores, sebaceous filaments, or surface debris. Picking can inflame the follicle, break the skin, and leave a mark.

Cleanse gently, avoid scrubbing brushes and harsh alcohol-based products, and choose non-comedogenic moisturiser or sunscreen. A clinician may suggest topical retinoids to normalise shedding inside follicles; introduce them gradually because dryness and irritation can occur. Professional acne extraction facial treatment may remove selected plugs when performed with clean technique. Isotretinoin treatment is reserved for particular acne patterns and requires medical supervision, so it is not a routine answer for a few blackheads. Keep the routine consistent rather than squeezing spots whenever they become visible.

Arrange a dermatology review if blackheads are widespread, repeatedly return despite gentle care, or occur with painful red bumps, pus, scarring, or sudden changes. Ask for assessment if a dark spot bleeds, crusts, grows, or does not behave like a pore. A clinician can confirm whether the problem is acne or another skin lesion and tailor treatment to your skin type and current products.
