Cat allergy cough: what should you know?

Cat allergens can cling to clothing, furniture, bedding, and carpets, so symptoms may continue after the cat has left the room. Coughing may occur with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, chest tightness, or a whistling sound. A cough after contact supports an allergic trigger, but cough also has other causes, including a common cold, acid reflux, or acute bronchitis. Persistent cough or cough with wheezing can occur with asthma and deserves assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Reduce contact with the cat and keep it out of the bedroom. Wash hands after touching the animal, change clothes if exposure was heavy, and clean soft furnishings regularly. Avoid brushing or bathing the cat yourself if that provokes symptoms. A clinician can review the timing of your cough, examine your breathing, and discuss allergy treatment or an inhaler when appropriate. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or start antibiotics for an allergy cough.

Arrange medical advice if the cough keeps returning, interrupts sleep, limits activity, or comes with wheezing. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening chest tightness. If symptoms begin immediately with swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, vomiting, or trouble breathing, treat this as an emergency.
