What should you know about Caroline Hirons and perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash that often appears as small red bumps around the mouth, nose or eyes. It may sting, burn, flake or feel tight, and a narrow area next to the lips can remain relatively clear. Pimples can look similar, so appearance alone does not confirm the diagnosis.

Potential contributors include topical corticosteroids, irritating products, heavy occlusive skincare and some toothpaste or cosmetic ingredients. The condition is not a sign that your skin is dirty, and adding more active products can make sensitivity harder to settle.

Arrange a dermatology assessment, especially if the rash persists or returns. Keep cleansing gentle, pause scrubs, exfoliating acids, fragranced products and unnecessary layers, and avoid applying steroid cream around the rash unless the prescriber specifically directs it. Do not abruptly change a prescribed steroid without discussing a safe plan.

Depending on severity and location, treatment may include Topical Antibiotic Therapy, Oral Antibiotics For Acne or another prescription. Use only the medicine selected for you and allow time for the skin barrier to recover.

Seek review if the rash reaches the eyes, causes eye pain or vision changes, spreads quickly, develops crusting or pus, or becomes very painful. Arrange assessment if symptoms continue despite simplifying your routine, because contact dermatitis, rosacea and other rashes can overlap.
