Cardiology PET scan: what to know

It uses a small amount of radiotracer and a specialised scanner. The purpose and preparation can differ from an oncology PET-CT, so the referral question matters. A PET image is interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and other cardiac tests.

A radiotracer is given before imaging. The scanner detects signals from the tracer and creates pictures showing patterns of tissue activity. Depending on the clinical question, the scan may compare heart muscle at rest and under medication-induced stress or look for an inflammatory pattern.

PET is often combined with CT to provide anatomical detail and help locate the activity. An unusual area is not a diagnosis by itself; the reporting specialist considers the tracer used, preparation quality and findings from other examinations.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about food, drinks, caffeine, exercise and medicines because protocols vary with the type of heart study. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, recent illness and difficulty lying flat.

Bring your medicine list and relevant heart imaging. Arrive early enough for preparation and tracer uptake. Afterward, follow the centre's guidance on fluids, close contact and resuming medicines; ask when the report will reach the referring clinician.

Get urgent medical help for severe or persistent chest pressure, sudden major breathlessness, fainting, or symptoms of stroke such as facial drooping, one-sided weakness or difficulty speaking. Do not wait for a scheduled scan to address these signs.

During the visit, immediately report chest discomfort, severe shortness of breath, swelling of the face or throat, widespread rash, or feeling faint. Staff can stop the procedure and assess you.

Confirm what cardiac question the scan is intended to answer, which tracer and protocol will be used, whether any medicine needs adjustment, and how the result might change management. Check whether this is a cardiac study or an oncology PET-CT if the wording on the referral is unclear.
