What should you know about a cardiac science ECG machine?

Short answer

A cardiac science ECG machine records the heart's electrical signals through skin electrodes to help assess rhythm and other cardiac patterns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the machine records

An ECG, or electrocardiogram, turns electrical activity into lines on a tracing. It can help a clinician assess heart rate, rhythm, and patterns that may suggest strain or reduced blood flow. The tracing is one part of an assessment and does not explain every symptom by itself. A machine records the signal; a trained clinician interprets it alongside your history, examination, and any other tests. Learn more about the ECG Machine and the Electrocardiogram procedure.

Preparing for an ECG

Wear clothing that allows access to your chest, arms, and legs, and tell the clinician about chest symptoms, palpitations, medicines, or implanted devices. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on clean skin while you remain still and breathe normally. The recording is brief, but movement, shivering, or loose contact can create interference and may require another tracing. The test does not send electricity into your body. Ask when and how the result will be explained, especially if the ECG was arranged for new symptoms.

Do not wait for a test

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden collapse, or symptoms with cold sweat, nausea, or marked weakness. Do not drive yourself for urgent symptoms simply because an ECG has been requested. Contact your clinician promptly for new or worsening palpitations, repeated dizziness, or breathlessness if no emergency warning sign is present.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why an ECG is recommended, whether you need to rest or avoid anything beforehand, when the result will be reviewed, and whether a normal tracing rules out all heart causes. Ask what follow-up is needed if symptoms continue.

Questions people ask

Does an ECG machine put electricity into me?

No. The electrodes detect electrical signals produced by your heartbeat; the machine does not deliver an electrical current during a routine ECG.

Can an ECG find every heart problem?

No. It provides useful information but may not capture intermittent problems or explain every symptom, so further assessment may be needed.
