Cardiac PET scanner

Short answer
A cardiac PET scanner detects signals from a radiotracer to show active tissue and combines that information with images of the heart and surrounding structures.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- PET role
- Shows tracer activity in tissues
- CT role
- Maps the location and anatomy
- Preparation
- May include fasting and medicine instructions
What PET adds
A PET scan shows how tissues are using the tracer, while the CT part provides an anatomical map. In a cardiac setting, clinicians may use the combined images to examine inflammation, infection, blood supply or tissue activity, depending on the tracer and clinical question. The scan is not a diagnosis by itself: movement, blood sugar, medicines and preparation can affect the images, and the report is considered with your history and other tests.
Getting ready
The imaging centre will give specific fasting and medicine instructions. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, recent illness and medicines that alter blood sugar. Wear comfortable clothing and expect an intravenous line for the tracer. After injection, you will rest quietly while the tracer distributes, then lie still for the scan. Ask when you may resume normal food, drink and activity.
When to seek care
Tell staff immediately if you feel faint, develop chest discomfort, have trouble breathing or notice a reaction during the appointment. After leaving, seek urgent care for severe chest pain, collapse, marked breathlessness or new confusion. Contact the imaging centre about persistent swelling, pain or redness at the injection site. Results should be reviewed with the clinician who requested the examination.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tracer is planned, what the cardiac question is, whether fasting or medicine changes apply, how diabetes affects preparation and when the combined images will be reported. Ask what further imaging, blood tests or tissue assessment might follow an uncertain result.
Questions people ask
What does the tracer do?
The tracer emits a detectable signal after it is introduced into the body, allowing the scanner to map activity in selected tissues.
Why are PET and CT combined?
PET provides functional information about tracer activity, while CT shows anatomy so the activity can be located more precisely.
