What should you know about cardiac heart failure?

Heart failure can affect the heart's pumping action, filling, or both. Reduced circulation and fluid retention may lead to breathlessness, a cough, tiredness, rapid heartbeat, or swollen ankles. Symptoms can develop gradually, and they may change with activity or when you lie down. High blood pressure and rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation can contribute to heart strain. Heart failure is a medical condition that can be assessed and managed; it does not mean the heart has stopped.

Book an assessment if you have ongoing breathlessness, unexplained fatigue, palpitations, or swelling. The clinician may review your history and medicines, examine you, check blood pressure and heart rhythm, and arrange tests. If diagnosed, follow the agreed medicine plan and attend monitoring appointments. Track changes in breathing, sleep, activity, swelling, and any sudden weight change. Ask before using over-the-counter medicines or supplements, since some can affect fluid balance or blood pressure. A chronic disease review can help coordinate longer-term care.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pressure, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or coughing up pink frothy mucus. Contact a clinician promptly if swelling increases quickly, breathing becomes harder when lying down, or your usual activity becomes suddenly difficult. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
