Can't sleep because of restless legs

Short answer
Restless legs can make sleep difficult by causing an uncomfortable urge to move, especially while resting at night.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What restless legs may mean
Restless legs usually feels like crawling, pulling, tingling, or an inner need to move the legs. Walking or stretching may ease it briefly, but symptoms can return when you sit or lie down. The pattern may be linked with Restless Legs Syndrome, and clinicians may also consider iron deficiency anaemia, chronic kidney disease, or peripheral neuropathy when assessing possible contributors.
Trouble sleeping can then lead to tiredness, poor concentration, or irritability the next day. The symptom itself does not establish a single cause, so the timing, sensations, medicines, health conditions, and sleep pattern all matter.
What you can do tonight
Keep a regular sleep and wake time, allow a quiet wind-down period, and try gentle calf stretching or a short walk before bed. A warm bath, massage, or heat pack may be soothing for some people. Limit caffeine later in the day and avoid nicotine or alcohol close to bedtime if they worsen symptoms.
Keep a brief record of when the sensation begins, what relieves it, and whether it affects one or both legs. Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms keep disrupting sleep. Do not start iron tablets without advice; a clinician can decide whether testing and Iron Supplementation are appropriate.
When to seek care
Book an appointment if restless legs are persistent, becoming more intrusive, or causing repeated sleep loss. Seek prompt medical advice for new weakness, loss of balance, numbness that is spreading, severe swelling, or a painful, hot leg. Urgent help is needed for sudden breathlessness or chest pain, particularly with one-sided leg swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit Restless Legs Syndrome, whether iron or kidney tests are suitable, and whether any medicine could be contributing. You can also ask which sleep and movement strategies are sensible for you, how long to try them, and what changes should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Why do restless legs stop me sleeping?
The urge to move and uncomfortable sensations can return when the legs are still, making it hard to settle or stay asleep.
Should I take iron for restless legs?
Only take iron after clinical advice, because testing can show whether iron supplementation is suitable and safe for you.
