Can sepsis be prevented?

Sepsis is a dangerous response to an infection that can affect the whole body. Infections such as cellulitis, pneumonia, and a urinary tract infection can sometimes lead to sepsis, although an infection does not automatically become sepsis.

Prevention focuses on reducing infections, noticing worsening illness early, and getting suitable treatment without delay. Hand hygiene, caring for wounds, keeping recommended vaccinations up to date, and controlling long-term conditions can all support safer recovery from infections.

Wash your hands regularly, clean cuts with safe water, and cover breaks in the skin with a clean dressing. Follow treatment instructions for an infection and do not stop prescribed medicine early unless a clinician tells you to.

Ask a clinician how to protect yourself if you have reduced immunity, diabetes, or another condition that makes infections harder to manage. Keep a note of new symptoms and whether they are getting better or worse.

Seek emergency help for confusion, difficulty breathing, faintness, clammy or unusually pale skin, or a rapid deterioration during an infection. Urgent assessment is also sensible when fever or chills occur with severe weakness, very little urine, or an inability to keep fluids down.
