Can pneumonia cause sepsis?

Pneumonia begins in the lungs, but an infection can activate an intense immune response throughout the body. In sepsis, that response can impair blood flow and the work of organs such as the lungs, kidneys or brain. Sepsis is a medical emergency and is different from an uncomplicated chest infection.

The risk of severe illness can be greater with older age, weakened immunity or significant long-term health problems, but sepsis can affect anyone with a serious infection. A person may deteriorate quickly, so a change from a chest illness to marked whole-body illness should not be watched at home.

Arrange medical assessment for breathlessness, fever, chest pain, a new cough or confusion, especially when symptoms are worsening. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and complete the advised course unless a clinician changes it. Keep fluids going if you can drink safely, rest, and tell the clinician about new symptoms rather than waiting for a routine review.

Do not share leftover antibiotics or delay care while trying home treatment for severe symptoms. If someone is confused or very weak, stay with them and prepare their medicines and medical history for the emergency team.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, clammy or mottled skin, very little urine, or inability to stay awake. A fast deterioration with pneumonia warrants emergency evaluation even if the person has not measured a fever.

Ask how severe the pneumonia appears, which symptoms should trigger emergency help, and when follow-up is needed. Ask how to take prescribed treatment, what fluids and activity are suitable, and whether another condition or medicine increases concern for sepsis.
