Can common cold cause sinusitis?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces around the nose that drain through small openings. A cold can make their lining swollen and increase mucus. When drainage slows, pressure, facial fullness, nasal blockage, reduced smell, cough, or thick nasal discharge may appear. Sinus symptoms during a cold do not automatically show bacterial infection. Sinusitis can be short-lived and viral, while symptoms that persist, improve and then become worse, or cause substantial facial pain deserve clinical assessment.

Drink regularly, rest, and use saline spray or a saline rinse prepared with safe water according to its instructions. Warm moisture may feel soothing, but avoid burns from very hot steam. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on pain relief and whether a nasal treatment is appropriate for you. Do not start leftover antibiotics, because they do not treat every cause of sinus symptoms. If using a decongestant, check that it is suitable with your blood pressure, pregnancy status, and other medicines.

Contact a clinician when facial pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, or nasal and sinus symptoms are not settling as expected. Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, a severe headache unlike usual, confusion, stiff neck, or difficulty breathing. Recurrent episodes or ongoing loss of smell also warrant an assessment for an underlying nasal or sinus problem.
