Can allergic rhinitis cause chronic sinusitis?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces connected to the nose through small openings. During an allergic flare, the lining of the nose and these passages can swell, while mucus becomes more noticeable. Narrowed openings may limit ventilation and drainage, allowing pressure, congestion and facial discomfort to persist. Chronic sinusitis refers to ongoing or recurring sinus inflammation; allergy is one possible contributor, but it is not the only explanation. Nasal polyps, a deviated nasal structure, irritants or infection can also play a part. Thick coloured mucus alone does not prove that antibiotics are needed, and symptoms should be interpreted with the full history and examination.

Keep a record of blocked nose, facial pressure, reduced smell and possible triggers. Limiting exposure to dust, smoke and known allergens can reduce irritation. Saline nasal rinsing may loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device after use. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a nasal corticosteroid or another treatment for allergy, with instructions on technique and duration. Do not insert cotton buds into the nose or use decongestant sprays for longer than the product guidance, because overuse can worsen blockage. Persistent symptoms deserve an examination to check the nose and consider causes beyond allergy.

Book an appointment if congestion, facial pressure, reduced smell or nasal discharge continues or repeatedly returns. Seek urgent care for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Fever with severe facial pain, difficulty opening the mouth, or marked swelling also warrants prompt assessment. A clinician can decide whether you need an examination of the nose, hearing of your symptoms over time, or further testing.
