Can allergic rhinitis cause asthma?

Allergic rhinitis inflames the nose and causes sneezing, itching, discharge, or blockage. Asthma affects the lower airways and can cause wheezing, cough, chest tightness, or breathlessness. The nose and lungs respond to some of the same allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Having rhinitis does not prove that a person has asthma, and breathing symptoms need their own evaluation.

Arrange a review if cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or breathlessness occurs with nasal allergy or during exercise, sleep, or exposure to a trigger. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether breathing tests are needed. Use prescribed inhalers exactly as instructed, keep track of triggers and symptoms, and follow your written asthma plan if you have one. Managing nasal inflammation may support overall airway control, but it does not replace asthma treatment.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening wheeze. Use your prescribed reliever according to your action plan while arranging help. A first episode of significant breathing difficulty also deserves prompt medical assessment, even if nasal symptoms seem to be the trigger.

Ask whether your cough or wheeze could be asthma, which tests may clarify the diagnosis, how to handle allergen exposure, and when to use each inhaler. Discuss nighttime symptoms, exercise limitation, prior attacks, and your emergency plan.
