Can acid reflux cause chronic cough?

Reflux may reach the back of the throat without the classic burning feeling. Acid or stomach contents can irritate sensitive tissues, while small amounts entering the voice box area can trigger a protective cough reflex. Coughing itself can increase pressure in the abdomen and make reflux feel worse.

A reflux-related cough may be dry, worse after meals or when lying down, and accompanied by throat clearing, a sour taste or hoarseness. These clues are not diagnostic: asthma, allergies, infection, smoking and some medicines can also cause chronic cough.

Note when coughing occurs in relation to meals, sleep and body position. Smaller meals, avoiding food shortly before bed, and raising the head end of the bed may reduce reflux-related irritation. Avoid smoking and discuss possible triggers or medicines with a clinician.

A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether an antacid or acid-lowering treatment is appropriate. Improvement with treatment can support the explanation, but a persistent cough still needs a broader review.

Arrange an assessment if the cough persists, affects sleep, causes vomiting, or comes with wheezing or voice change. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, coughing blood, chest pain, or sudden deterioration.
