What a runny nose may indicate

A runny nose happens when the nasal lining produces extra fluid. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 may cause it alongside sore throat, cough, fever or body aches. Allergic rhinitis, pet allergy and house dust mite allergy more often bring sneezing, itching or watery eyes. Sinusitis can cause facial pressure and thicker discharge. Safer ways to manage symptoms

Rest, drink fluids and clear the nose gently. Saline drops or spray can loosen mucus; a humidified room may feel soothing. Calpol contains paracetamol in some formulations and is intended for pain or fever, so follow the exact label for the product, age and strength. Do not combine it with another medicine containing paracetamol. Ask a pharmacist before giving it to a child, especially if the child is very young, has liver disease or takes other medicines. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue lips, severe drowsiness, dehydration, a stiff neck or a rapidly worsening illness.
