Cold symptoms with watery eyes and a runny nose: what to know

A common cold can cause a watery or blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat and cough. Allergic rhinitis often causes repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes and clear nasal discharge, especially after contact with pollen, house dust mites or pets. Influenza more often brings a sudden unwell feeling, fever, aches and marked tiredness. COVID-19 can overlap with these symptoms. Sinusitis may follow a cold and add facial pressure, reduced smell or thick discharge.

Watery eyes and a runny nose do not prove that the cause is an allergy or infection. Consider whether symptoms began after a specific exposure, whether itch is prominent, and whether fever or body aches are present.

Rest, drink fluids, wash hands, and use a clean cool compress over closed eyes if they feel irritated. Saline nasal spray or rinsing may help clear mucus when used safely. Reduce exposure to suspected irritants and keep windows closed during a known outdoor trigger if practical. A pharmacist can help choose an antihistamine or other product, taking account of age, pregnancy, medicines and medical conditions. Follow product directions and avoid sharing towels.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, severe eye pain, sudden vision change, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction. Arrange prompt medical advice for pain or swelling around an eye, severe facial pain, dehydration, confusion, or a high or persistent fever. Book a routine review when symptoms last beyond the expected illness, repeatedly return, or interfere with sleep and daily activities.
