What the California mastitis test means for human breast symptoms

Short answer
The California mastitis test is designed for animal milk and should not be used to diagnose human mastitis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this test actually checks
This is a veterinary screening method used on milk from animals. Its reaction reflects cell material in the milk, helping animal-health workers investigate inflammation in an udder. Human breast milk naturally contains cells, and the veterinary test has no established role in deciding whether a breastfeeding person has mastitis. A result from a kit therefore cannot confirm infection, identify a germ or show which medicine a person needs.
How human mastitis is assessed
If you have a painful, hot or reddened area of breast, feel unwell, or develop fever or chills while breastfeeding, contact a healthcare professional. Assessment usually relies on your symptoms, feeding history and a breast examination. Tell the clinician about nipple damage, difficulty with milk removal, a persistent lump, discharge and medicines already tried. Feeding support can help with positioning and comfortable milk removal; aggressive squeezing or deep breast massage may worsen inflammation.
When to arrange urgent care
Seek prompt medical review if you feel systemically unwell, symptoms are worsening, redness is spreading, pain is severe, or there is a soft or fluid-filled swelling that could represent an abscess. Emergency help is appropriate for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or severe weakness. A breast change that persists after inflammation settles also deserves clinical examination.
Points to discuss at your visit
You can ask whether the pattern fits inflammatory mastitis, whether an abscess needs imaging, and how to keep feeding or expressing comfortably. If symptoms recur or do not improve as expected, ask whether a milk sample or another investigation is appropriate. Bring the name of any veterinary test or home product you used so the clinician can interpret what happened without relying on its result.

Questions people ask
Can I use a California mastitis test on human breast milk?
It is not a validated way to diagnose human mastitis, so its result should not guide medical treatment.
Does a reaction prove there is a bacterial infection?
No. The reaction does not confirm a human breast infection or identify its cause.
Do people with mastitis always need a milk test?
No. Many assessments are clinical, although a clinician may consider sampling when symptoms are severe, recurrent or not improving as expected.
