Calcium tendonitis of the hip explained

How the structures involved in Tendinopathy differ from normal

Short answer

Calcium tendonitis of the hip, more precisely called calcific tendinopathy, occurs when calcium deposits develop within a tendon near the hip.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Clinical term
Calcific tendinopathy of the hip
Assessment
Symptoms, physical examination, and imaging are considered together
Early approach
Modify painful loading while maintaining comfortable movement

The short answer

It can cause focal pain, tenderness, stiffness, and difficulty walking, climbing stairs, lying on the affected side, or moving the hip. Symptoms and deposit size do not always match, so assessment considers the examination and imaging together.

Where the pain comes from

A deposit can irritate tendon tissue and nearby structures. Pain may sit at the outer hip, groin, or buttock depending on which tendon is involved, and it may flare as the body reacts to or begins absorbing the deposit.

A clinician checks hip movement, tendon loading, strength, walking pattern, and whether symptoms may instead arise from the joint, lower back, or another soft tissue. X-ray or ultrasound can locate calcium, while other imaging may be considered when the diagnosis remains unclear.

Practical management

Temporarily reduce movements that sharply reproduce pain, but keep comfortable daily movement rather than resting the hip completely. A physiotherapist may guide gradual mobility, hip and trunk strengthening, and a paced return to walking or sport.

Pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medicine may be suitable for some people after a clinician or pharmacist checks other conditions and medicines. If symptoms persist, the specialist may discuss image-guided procedures or shockwave therapy; the appropriate choice depends on the tendon, deposit, and clinical findings.

When the hip needs prompt assessment

Arrange a clinical review when pain keeps returning, disrupts sleep, alters your walking, or prevents normal activity. Seek urgent medical care for severe pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, a visibly changed limb, fever with a hot or swollen hip, rapidly worsening weakness or numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Useful questions at your appointment

Ask which tendon contains the deposit, what else could explain the pain, and whether imaging findings fit your examination. Discuss which activities to modify, how to progress strengthening, what treatment risks apply to you, and what change would prompt further imaging or a specialist procedure.

Questions people ask

Does calcium tendonitis mean there is too much calcium in my diet?

The tendon deposit is not usually explained simply by dietary calcium intake, so do not restrict calcium without clinical advice.

Can calcific tendinopathy settle without a procedure?

Symptoms can improve with time and conservative care, although the course varies and persistent functional problems deserve reassessment.

Should I exercise a painful hip?

Comfortable movement is generally useful, but sharply painful loading should be reduced and exercise progressed according to symptoms and clinical guidance.
