Calcium lactate for cough: what to know

A cough clears mucus or irritants from the airways. It may occur with a common cold, acute bronchitis, allergies, asthma or acid reflux. A cough continuing beyond the expected illness, recurring at night or occurring with wheeze may need an assessment. Calcium lactate is a calcium salt; it does not address airway inflammation, infection, reflux or allergy. Taking it for a cough without a clear reason can delay attention to the underlying problem.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated and avoid smoke, dust and strong fragrances. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat, and honey can be considered for adults and children over one year old. Use medicines only as directed and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child or taking regular medicines. A clinician may listen to your chest and choose treatment based on the cough pattern, duration and associated symptoms.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion or sudden worsening. Arrange medical review for a cough that persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, comes with fever that does not settle, or affects usual activity. A cough can be a presentation of several conditions, so the symptom alone does not identify which one is present.
