Calcific tendonitis explained

How the structures involved in Tendinopathy differ from normal

Short answer

Calcific tendonitis is a painful inflammatory tendon condition associated with calcium deposits, most often recognised around the shoulder but possible in other parts of the body.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it is
Calcium deposited within a tendon with associated irritation
Common evaluation
History, physical examination and targeted imaging
Care pathway
Symptom control followed by progressive movement and strengthening

The short answer

Pain may build gradually or flare suddenly, with movement becoming restricted because the tendon and nearby tissues are irritated. Many cases are managed without an operation, but the right approach depends on the affected site, severity and effect on function.

What the calcium deposit means

The deposit forms inside a tendon rather than representing loose pieces of bone. Symptoms can become intense when the surrounding tissue reacts or when the deposit changes. Tenderness, night pain, weakness limited by pain and loss of comfortable movement may occur.

A clinician combines the history with tests of movement, strength and nearby joints. X-rays or ultrasound can show the deposit, while other imaging may be chosen if a different injury is suspected. The finding needs clinical context because a deposit can occasionally be incidental.

A staged treatment approach

During a flare, temporarily reduce the movements that provoke sharp pain and use only medicines that are suitable for your medical history. Keeping the unaffected joints moving and using the painful area within a tolerable range can limit unnecessary stiffness.

Rehabilitation then builds motion, muscle control and tendon capacity in measured steps. When persistent symptoms remain clearly linked to the deposit, options may include shockwave therapy or an image-guided procedure. A specialist can explain the purpose and risks of each choice; surgery is considered only for selected cases that remain substantially limiting.

When symptoms need medical attention

Seek urgent assessment for a hot, red and swollen joint with fever, severe pain following injury, an obvious deformity, sudden inability to use the limb, or new numbness or weakness. These features require evaluation for problems other than a routine tendon flare.

Arrange a non-emergency appointment if pain persists, regularly wakes you, restricts ordinary tasks or keeps returning. A changing pain pattern deserves a fresh examination rather than assuming the known deposit remains responsible.

Clarify the diagnosis and plan

Consider asking whether the deposit matches your symptoms, which movements are safe now, how rehabilitation will be progressed and when improvement should be reviewed. If a procedure is proposed, ask what it targets, what recovery involves and what alternatives fit your situation.

Questions people ask

Is calcific tendonitis the same as arthritis?

No. Calcific tendonitis involves a tendon, whereas arthritis affects a joint. Either can cause nearby pain and stiffness, so an examination helps separate them.

Does dietary calcium cause the deposit?

The condition is not simply caused by eating calcium-rich foods. Do not restrict dietary calcium unless a qualified clinician has advised this for another health reason.

Can exercise make it worse?

Exercise that is too demanding for an irritable tendon can increase symptoms, but a tailored, gradual programme can restore movement and capacity. Load should be adjusted to your response.
