Short answer
Caffeine does not cure every headache; it may briefly alter pain, while regular or excessive use can trigger withdrawal and recurring symptoms.

Why caffeine can seem to work
Caffeine affects the nervous system and blood-vessel tone. That can change pain for some people, especially when caffeine is included in a headache medicine. Relief does not prove that caffeine caused the headache or that it is the right treatment. A headache can arise with dehydration, heat exhaustion, a common cold, allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis.
Headache with fever, marked tiredness, body aches or a recent exposure may need a different assessment, including consideration of COVID-19 or dengue fever in the appropriate setting. Anxiety can also intensify pain and make caffeine symptoms more noticeable.
A sensible self-care plan
Pause strenuous activity, drink water, eat if you have missed food, and rest in a calm, dim room. Keep a diary of timing, location, severity, sleep, meals, illness symptoms and caffeine. Avoid chasing each headache with another caffeinated drink. If you regularly use caffeine, reduce it gradually and follow the label for any pain medicine. Never combine products without checking their ingredients.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting or new speech or vision problems. Arrange a review for a new persistent headache, a pattern that is becoming more frequent, pain after head injury, or headache with significant fever or dehydration. The cause should guide treatment.
